Powerline Technician Basics

Hydro One offers this course to its staff and there is a one year waiting list to attend – it's that popular! In partnership with Hydro One, this course is now being offered through our training program.

This course is designed for participants interested in a “hands on” experience of power lines and related construction activities. Under the guidance of trained instructors, learn how to set a pole and to climb poles and towers.  An introduction to bucket trucks is also included.   Participants engage in activities requiring a group effort, strengthening the importance of team building and communication skills. Whether you work directly with Operations staff or require a better understanding of the electrical distribution system, this is an effective way of expanding you knowledge of system design and the required skills of a successful Powerline Technician. Participants working with the line trades will find this course particularly valuable.

Course Outline:

The following topics will be covered:
  • Introduction to bucket trucks and RBD activities
  • Practical exercises including pole climbing, tower climbing (limited heights)
  • Pole setting
  • Bucket rescue demonstration (don’t worry, no-one will be left stranded)


Prepared to perform physical activities.
PPE and safety boots required.
